How to practice your Listening in English?
You’re trying to improve your listening skills and you are a very busy person. Now, even if you are not busy, this post is going to help you improve your listening practice and get better results.
The first you need to understand is how to listen. Unfortunately, with many videos on the internet, a lot of websites on the internet, many teachers, many different schools, we tend to interpret that if you want to improve your listening skills, you need to listen a lot, for many hours and that’s not very realistic.
You know, I was thinking about this a few weeks ago. I was watching my parents watch Netflix and I began to pay attention and I started talking to my dad about how often he watched Netflix. Even though he watches it every week, he knows zero English. Obviously, he doesn’t study English and you could be thinking: ‘but your parents are old, teacher” Well, in my academy, I have students who are 60, or 70, or 65, or 68, so age is just a number.
The point I am making is that if you don’t have a clear strategy, it doesn’t matter how often you listen to audios in English.
That’s why listening to a 3-minute audio can be really productive if you follow the right guidelines.
When you’re trying to improve your listening comprehension, you need to focus on the information. That’s the key, that’s what you’re trying to get. And the longer the audio is, the harder it gets to understand so much information, as your brain will not be paying attention 100% of the time.
When building your listening skills, you need to increase the length of the audio “gradually”.
With a 3-minute audio, you have a more objective video or audio, a more objective piece of information. If the goal of the video is to teach you how to make a cake, it is very clear what is going to happen in 3 minutes while in 30 minutes, it can be very difficult to get main ideas, to get details because there are many details and if you’re trying to improve your listening, you will need to test your attention to details.
I have posted a video where I give you 5 steps to help you practice with a 3-minute audio.
I am sure this video will help you better understand what you need to do!
