Grammar is Easy – Learn Verb To Be

In this section of the blog you will learn about English grammar! Today I want to talk to you about verb to be! Take a look at my picture, teacher Prix:

 

Verb to BE  is a very important verb in English. That’s why this is the number ONE post on my blog. Here, you will find many grammar explanations, from basic grammar points, to advanced ones! Now, before we talk about verb to be, we need to review pronouns. Pronouns are very important, because we need them to make phrases in English.

Here they are:

 

For each pronoun, you have a verb to BE conjugation. There are three conjugations in the simple present: AM, IS, ARE

For negative sentences:

For interrogative sentences (questions):

 

These three conjugations (am, is, are) can be “contracted”, “abbreviated” in affirmative and negative sentences. Take a look:

Now that you know the 3 conjugations, it is important to know when to use verb to be. Take a look at some examples below:

 

TO TALK ABOUT OCCUPATIONS

I’m a teacher

Jane is a doctor

Linda is a lawyer

TO TALK ABOUT COUNTRIES AND NATIONALITIES:

I am from Brazil (country)

Linda is from the USA. She is American (country – USA. Nationality – American)

Pizza is from ITALY (country)

My best friend is German (nationality)

 

TO TALK ABOUT FEELINGS/EMOTIONS:

How are you today? I’m fine! I’m happy! I’m sad

How is Linda today? She is great! She is sick! She is hungry!

The kids are tired!

My mother is happy!

 

Exercise 1: complete the phrases below with verb to be:

I ____ cold. Can you close the window, please?

Jane ____ sick. She ____ in bed right now.

My best friend ____ afraid of spiders!

The kids ____ hungry.  It ____ lunch time!

Those people ___________ French. They ______ Italian.

Your cell phone ____ on the table.

Jack _________ interested in Arts. He _______ interested  in sports.

Linda _________ a teacher. She ______ a lawyer.

____ you ok? You look tired.

_____ the heater on? It ___ so cold here.

I ________ a doctor. I _______ a teacher.

Jane ______ Brazilian. SHe ______ American.

Peter _____ Australian. He _____ British.

 

Exercise 2: rewrite the sentences. Contract the verb to be.

Jane is a politician. She is American.

The dogs are in the backyard. They are playing.

The kids are not hungry. They are happy.

The doctor is not happy. He is worried.

The test is not difficult. It is easy.

Linda is not a teacher. She is a lawyer.

My father is dentist.

Exercise 3 Complete the story. Use verb to be.

Hello! My name is Jasmin. I___22 years old. I ___  a student. I ___ from Bogotá, Colombia. I ___ interested in arts and music. I love music! My parents ___ in Colombia. Now, I ___ in the USA. I ___ living in San Francisco, California.  My father ___a dentist and my mother___a teacher.

San Francisco___very beautiful. There ___ many beautiful places here. I have many friends at schools. My friends ___ students too! I have 3 friends! Melinda, Jack and Peter. Melinda___Brazilian. She ___ from Rio de Janeiro. She ___ 29 years old. In Brazil she ___ a doctor, but here in California she ___ a student like me. Jack ___from Germany. He ___German.  He___25 years old. In Germany he___ a student too. Peter___ German too. He ___24 years old. All my friends love music. They ___ very good people! They ___ happy and  energetic like me!
